The framework
How the Enneagram works
The Enneagram maps nine personality types around a circle, each organized around a core motivation: a deep fear it steers away from and a deep desire it steers toward. Two people can behave identically for opposite reasons — the framework is interested in the reason.
The nine types group into three centers of intelligence — body (8, 9, 1), heart (2, 3, 4), and head (5, 6, 7). Each type is shaded by a wing (a neighbor on the circle) and connected by arrows to the types it tends to borrow from in growth and under stress. We present wings and arrows as a traditional lens many people find useful — not as settled science.
Origins
A short history
The nine-pointed symbol is ancient and its lineage is debated. The modern psychological system — the nine types as we use them today — was developed in the mid-20th century by Óscar Ichazo and elaborated by the psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo, then widely developed by many teachers since. It draws on older contemplative traditions but took its current shape as a personality framework within living memory.
The build
How MyDailyEnneagram.com’s instrument was built
Every item is written to psychometric standards and aimed at motivation, not behavior. Items are worded at the cost and attention side of each pattern (so agreement bias doesn’t masquerade as a type), with validity and attention checks that flag idealized or inattentive answering, and a set of forced-choice tie-breakers — a complete pair design that gives every pair of look-alike types its own head-to-head test.
When your top types run close, we serve those tie-breakers and then show you a confirmation step: the exact motivational fork between your candidates, so you cast the deciding vote. That’s how skilled Enneagram teachers actually type people, and no honest questionnaire skips it.
The math
How scoring and confidence work
You’re scored on all nine types, not sorted into one. Your nine-bar chart shows your pattern scores — how strongly each type showed up in your answers — and it never changes based on tie-breakers. Tie-breakers and the confirmation step only affect which type we call and how confident we are, never the chart itself. (These aren’t yet population-normed; once our norming cohort is in, they become true percentiles against other people.)
We report your result as a match weight and an honest confidence band: how clearly your top type separates from the runner-up. A clear lead reads as high confidence; a near-tie reads as a close call — and we say so plainly. Your wing is computed as your stronger neighboring type, disclosed as the traditional lens it is. When your two neighboring types score within one point of each other, we report your wing as balanced rather than forcing a lean.
The evidence
Reliability & data
Well-built Enneagram instruments reach internal-consistency reliability in the same range as mainstream personality tests. As our own dataset matures, we will publish our per-scale reliability statistics on this page. Every response (anonymized) helps strengthen the instrument — that’s part of why the test exists.
The caveats
Limits, plainly stated
A major 2021 systematic review of over one hundred research samples found the evidence mixed — promising for the nine type scales, thin for the finer machinery of wings and arrows, and silent on whether humanity truly comes in exactly nine kinds. We build on what has support and frame the rest as tradition.
